Philippine Arena: Quakeproof

Philippine Arena - Discovery Channel (Man Made Marvels: Quake Proof)

“The largest domed theater on the planet” is also the newest coliseum in the Philippines, and it’s nearing completion in Bocaue, Bulacan, to be unveiled – possibly with 50,000 people in attendance – to herald the centenary of Iglesia ni Cristo.

It was a riveting show on the Discovery Channel as architect Andrew James guided the viewer on a tour of the amphitheater that occupies 34,000 sqm (its dome takes up 36,000 sqm, “the biggest roof space in the world”), coupled with the insights provided by Renato Solidum, earthquake expert of Phivolcs. The Philippine Arena, as it was referred to throughout the one-hour program on television, is touted as earthquake-proof even if it sits a mere 30 km from the (Marikina) West Valley Fault, even if 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes are generated ‘round the Pacific ring of fire. But then as Dr. Solidum put it, “earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” Manila Bulletin ("INC arena is planet’s biggest" - Julie Yap Daza

Philippine Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena being constructed at Ciudad de Victoria, a 75-hectare tourism enterprise zone in Bocaue and Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines. With a capacity of up to 55,000, it will be the world's largest indoor domed-arena. It is the centerpiece of the many centennial projects of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) for their grand celebration on July 27, 2014. The legal owner of the arena is the INC's educational institution, New Era University.

Populous, a Kansas City-based global mega-architecture firm, designed the arena through their firm in Brisbane, Australia. The arena has been master planned to enable at least 50,000 people to gather inside the building and a further 50,000 to gather at a ‘live site’ or plaza outside to share in major events. The arena is a one-sided bowl. The lower bowl will be the most frequently used part of the building and the architectural design allows for easy separation of the lower bowl from the upper tier, by curtaining with acoustic and thermal properties.

PWP Landscape Architecture, the firm who landscaped the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, designed the landscape for the arena and the whole complex of Ciudad de Victoria. For the arena, a series of outdoor plazas, gardens and performance venues form the setting for the development including: The North and South Arrival Plazas, The Promontory Plaza, The Great Stairs, and Ciudad de Victoria Plaza that are all related to each other with two cross axes (N-S and E-W) that intersect at the Promontory Plaza.

The arena will not only hold major church gatherings, it will also operate as a multi-use sports and concert venue, capable of holding a range of events from boxing and basketball to live music performances. There is clear "line of sight" for every seat from each tier, even for various arena configurations such as church ceremonies, boxing, tennis, concerts or indoor gymnastics. The overall vision of the masterplan will eventually see inclusion of shopping centers a hospital and large scale residential developments.

It began on October 19, 1953, DZAQ, the forerunner of DZMM was the first radio station of the former ABS (Alto Broadcasting System) of the Quirinos under President Elpidio Quirino's brother, Antonio (originally came from the pre-1953 experimental station DZBC). DZAQ features news, variety and music programs on an AM format which then the basis of DZAQ-TV, years later when ABS and CBN were merged into a single network in 1967, DZAQ switched into CBN-owned DZXL, another AM broadcaster simply named as DZXL Radyo Patrol, the pre-martial law station of ABS-CBN until 1972.

However on the night of September 23, 1972, both DZXL, DZYK and DZAQ-TV were halted as Metrocom forces seized ABS-CBN broadcast complex two days after President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law, even DZAQ/DZXL personalities are arrested because of strict censorship as it went off the air, two years after the forced shut down of all radio and television stations, DWWW, a crony-owned AM station of Kanlaon Broadcasting System (KBS) began to air in 1974 which contains not only in news, but also public service programs and music as well. Veteran anchors and new recruits like Johnny de Leon, Rod Navarro, Noli de Castro and Vic Morales are some the announcers of the station, came into DWWW at that time. When the 1986 EDSA Revolution was started for three days, reformist rebels stormed into RPN broadcast complex as DWWW knocked off from the air following the capture of channel 4 on the morning of February 24, 1986. At the end, both DWWW and DWOK of BBC were sequestered by the government.

The fall of the Marcos Regime brought about the return of ABS-CBN. In July 1986, then newly-formed Presidential Commission on Good Government turned two radio stations, DWWW of RPN and DWOK of BBC, back to ABS-CBN. DWWW was renamed DZMM and resumes broadcasting. Lito Balquierda Jr., Vice-President for Radio, spearheaded the return of the giant network to the local broadcasting scene.

Basketball TV or BTV is a 24-hour all-basketball cable channel in the Philippines owned by the Solar Entertainment Corporation. It was launched on October 1, 2006, rebranding the Sports Plus channel.

The channel focuses more on showing NBA TV related programs and also regular NBA games once the season begins. In its initial broadcasts, it has been showing re-runs of the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

Aside for the NBA games, it also shows coverage of the Euroleague and the National Basketball League as well as FIBA related programming and the 2006 Asian Games and 2008 Olympic Games basketball competitions. The 2007 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament was shown on BTV including the championship game, as well as the 2008 tournament.

Aside for its foreign coverage, BTV was the official carrier of the Philippine Basketball League from April 2007 after gaining the rights from Studio 23. However, the coverage is on a slightly delayed basis at 5:00 PM. In late-2007, the second matchup of a Tuesday gameday is shown on RPN 9 but has since moved to IBC-13[citation needed] on Saturdays at the onset of the season-ending conference because RPN became the exclusive broadcast carrier of C/S. However the PBL was moved back to C/S 9 in November 2008, showing the first game on Tuesday. As of 2010, the PBL is inactive.

It also covered the Collegiate Champions League tournaments, and in the past saw a few National Capital Region Athletic Association and National Basketball Conference matches.

From 2008-2011, the Philippine Basketball Association was also shown on BTV, although on delay and only one game per day, with the live games aired on RPN and later Studio 23.

The channel is available throughout Metro Manila through SkyCable and is also available nationwide via Cignal and G-Sat satellite TV, as well as online via iwantv.com.ph (exclusively available for SkyBroadband and Bayan DSL subscribers).

A supplementary channel, NBA Premium TV, was launched in time for the 2010-11 season, featuring over 400 games with no local commercials. The network is available on both HD and SD formats, and is available as a premium subscription plan with additional fees.  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
